Acne Explained in Simple Terms

Think of a pore like a tiny tunnel in your skin. Acne happens when that tunnel gets too oily, clogged, and inflamed.

🧴 1. Your skin makes oil

Your skin has tiny glands that produce sebum, an oily substance that helps protect and moisturize your skin.

Sometimes—especially because of hormones—these glands make too much oil.

🚪 2. The pore gets blocked

Dead skin cells can stick together with the oil and block the pore.

This creates:

  • Whiteheads when the pore is closed
  • Blackheads when the pore is open

Blackheads aren’t dirt—the dark color comes from changes in the material inside the pore when it’s exposed to air.

🦠 3. Bacteria and other microbes get involved

A bacterium called Cutibacterium acnes normally lives on your skin.

When a pore becomes clogged and oily, it can contribute to irritation and inflammation.

🔥 4. Your immune system reacts

Your body responds to the irritated pore, causing inflammation.

That’s what makes a pimple:

  • Red
  • Swollen
  • Tender
  • Sometimes filled with pus

🧬 Why do some people get more acne?

Several things can influence acne:

  • Hormones → increase oil production
  • Genetics → some people are naturally more acne-prone
  • Skin-cell buildup → makes clogging more likely
  • Inflammation → determines how severe a breakout becomes
  • Certain foods, medications, and stress → can worsen acne in some people

🧠 The simplest way to remember it

More oil + clogged pore + inflammation = acne

And one important myth: acne isn’t caused by being dirty. Scrubbing your skin harder won’t solve it and can actually make irritation worse.
