A Simple Routine for Acne-Prone Skin
You don’t need a complicated 10-step routine to manage acne. Start with a few products, introduce treatments gradually, and give your skin time to respond.
🌞 Morning
1. Gentle cleanser
Wash with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid scrubbing or using very hot water.
2. Acne treatment β choose one
- Benzoyl peroxide 2.5% for red, inflamed pimples.
- Salicylic acid 0.5β2% for clogged pores, blackheads, and whiteheads.
3. Lightweight moisturizer
Look for non-comedogenic products so you can moisturize without unnecessarily adding pore-clogging ingredients.
4. Sunscreen
Finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30+. This is especially important if acne leaves dark marks.
🌙 Evening
1. Cleanse
Remove sunscreen, makeup, sweat, and excess oil gently.
2. Treatment
If appropriate for you, adapalene 0.1% can be used at night to help prevent clogged pores and new breakouts. Begin 2β3 nights per week and increase gradually as your skin adjusts.
3. Moisturizer
Apply enough to keep your skin comfortable and reduce treatment-related dryness.
🚫 Keep it simple
Avoid piling on scrubs, toners, exfoliating acids, retinoids, and multiple acne medications at the same time. Irritated skin can become harder to manage.
And don’t pick or squeeze pimplesβit can increase inflammation and the risk of marks and scars.
⏳ Give it time
Acne treatments generally require several weeks of consistent use. If your acne is painful, cystic, scarring, or isn’t improving despite consistent treatment, a dermatologist can help.
One important exception: avoid topical retinoids such as adapalene during pregnancy unless your healthcare professional specifically advises otherwise.
