How Natural Cycles Support Life

When Should You See a Dermatologist for Acne?

You don’t necessarily need a dermatologist for every breakout, but it’s worth making an appointment if:

  • Acne is painful or deep — large nodules or cysts can cause permanent scarring.
  • You’re developing scars or persistent dark/red marks.
  • Over-the-counter treatment hasn’t helped after about 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
  • Acne is widespread or severe on your face, chest, back, or shoulders.
  • Breakouts are affecting your confidence, mood, or daily life.
  • Your acne keeps returning despite a consistent skincare routine.
  • You suspect hormonal acne or another underlying cause.
  • You want to consider treatments such as prescription retinoids, hormonal therapy, oral antibiotics, or isotretinoin.

A dermatologist can also distinguish acne from conditions that look similar and create a treatment plan that minimizes irritation and scarring.

One important point: don’t wait for severe acne to become severe before seeking help. Early treatment can reduce the risk of permanent scarring.
