Clearer pores are maintained not by permanently shrinking them, but by consistently managing the biological processes that lead to clogging. Pores are the visible openings of hair follicles connected to sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum to support skin barrier function and lubrication. When excess sebum combines with retained dead skin cells due to abnormal follicular keratinization, clogged pores form. Overwashing or using harsh exfoliants can damage the skin barrier, potentially triggering compensatory oil production and increasing irritation-induced breakouts. Lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers help maintain hydration and support the barrier, even in individuals with oily skin. Daily sunscreen use is also important, as ultraviolet exposure can worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and contribute to collagen degradation that affects pore appearance.

Improvements often occur gradually over several skin cycles, and discontinuing maintenance treatments may allow microcomedones to reform. Because acne is typically a chronic condition influenced by hormones and genetics, long-term management rather than short-term correction is often necessary.
