Inconsistent cleansing habits or the use of heavy cosmetics can exacerbate blackheads and whiteheads, while over-cleansing or harsh exfoliation may impair the skin barrier, potentially worsening inflammation and sensitivity.

Evidence-informed treatment strategies focus on normalizing follicular turnover, reducing excess oil, and controlling inflammation. Topical retinoids are often recommended because they help regulate keratinocyte shedding within the follicle, which may reduce the formation of new comedones. Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, penetrates into pores and may help dissolve accumulated debris, making it a commonly used ingredient for blackheads and oily skin. Benzoyl peroxide is frequently included in acne regimens for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly when inflammatory lesions are present. Niacinamide may support barrier function while also helping to reduce redness and regulate oil production.

Consistent, gentle skincare practices are equally important. Using a mild cleanser, applying non-comedogenic moisturizers, and incorporating sunscreen can help maintain overall skin health while minimizing irritation from active ingredients. For individuals with persistent or severe acne, dermatology-based treatments such as prescription retinoids, topical antibiotics, oral medications, or procedural therapies may be considered under professional guidance.

It is important to maintain realistic expectations, as acne treatments typically require several weeks of consistent use before visible improvement occurs. Overuse of active ingredients can disrupt the skin barrier and may contribute to dryness or irritation, which can complicate management of clogged pores and comedonal acne. Because acne presentations vary widely, consultation with a qualified healthcare professional is advisable for tailored recommendations, especially when over-the-counter skincare ingredients do not provide sufficient control.
