Acne develops through a complex biological process that involves excess sebum production, abnormal shedding of skin cells inside the hair follicle, bacterial activity, and inflammation. Within each pore, skin cells normally rise to the surface and shed gradually. In acne-prone skin, this process—known as follicular keratinization—can become disrupted. Dead skin cells accumulate and mix with sebum, forming a plug that blocks the pore and creates comedones such as blackheads and whiteheads.
