This can trigger a compensatory response in which sebaceous glands produce more sebum in an attempt to restore balance. Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid attract water into the skin, while emollients and occlusives help seal in that moisture and reinforce the barrier. Ingredients like niacinamide and ceramides are often used to support barrier repair and reduce inflammation, which can be beneficial for acne-prone skin. Gentle cleansing and the use of non-comedogenic moisturizers can further help maintain hydration without contributing to pore blockage.

It is important to understand that hydration alone does not directly treat acne, but it creates an environment in which the skin can function more normally and respond better to active treatments. Overly aggressive attempts to control oil without addressing hydration may disrupt the skin barrier and prolong the cycle of breakouts. A balanced approach that includes both hydration and targeted acne treatments is often more effective for long-term skin health.
