Even after visible acne improves with treatment, the underlying tendency for microcomedone formation may still remain. Maintenance skincare is therefore commonly recommended to help regulate these processes and reduce the likelihood of new breakouts forming.

High humidity, friction from clothing or helmets, and the use of heavy or occlusive skincare products may increase the likelihood of pore congestion in some individuals. Stress and irregular sleep patterns may also influence hormonal signaling that affects oil production and inflammatory responses in the skin. Maintenance routines often work best when they are combined with broader skincare habits that minimize these potential triggers.

Although maintenance skincare can play an important role in preventing new breakouts, it does not permanently eliminate acne susceptibility. Many individuals have genetic or hormonal tendencies that make them more prone to clogged pores and inflammation over time. Continued use of evidence-based skincare ingredients, along with periodic guidance from dermatology professionals when needed, may help maintain clearer skin and reduce the frequency or severity of future acne flare-ups.
