Acne in Your 30s: Causes and Tips

Acne doesn’t necessarily disappear after your teens. Adult acne in your 30s is common, and it can have different triggers than teenage acne.

Common causes

  • Hormonal fluctuations: Changes in estrogen and androgens can increase oil production and clogged pores. Hormonal acne often appears around the chin, jawline, and lower face.
  • Stress: Chronic stress may worsen inflammation and oil production.
  • Skin and hair products: Makeup, sunscreen, moisturizers, or hair products that clog pores can contribute.
  • Medications: Certain medications can cause or worsen acne.
  • Genetics: A family tendency toward adult acne can increase your risk.
  • Lifestyle factors: Sweat, friction, lack of sleep, and some dietary patterns may aggravate acne in certain people.

Tips for managing acne in your 30s

Keep your routine simple:

  1. Cleanse gently twice daily; avoid scrubbing.
  2. Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to protect your skin barrier.
  3. Wear SPF 30+ every day.
  4. Consider an acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or adapalene. Introduce one active at a time and start gradually to reduce irritation.
  5. Don’t pick or squeeze pimples—it increases the risk of scarring and dark marks.
  6. Give a treatment several weeks to work rather than constantly switching products.

When to see a dermatologist

Consider professional help if acne is painful, cystic, scarring, persistent, or significantly affecting your confidence. If acne suddenly develops alongside irregular periods or increased facial/body hair, a healthcare professional can also assess whether an underlying hormonal issue could be contributing.

One important note: If you’re pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, check with your clinician before using acne medications—particularly retinoids such as adapalene.

If you describe your age, where the acne appears, and whether it’s mainly bumps, blackheads, whiteheads, or painful cysts, I can suggest a simple 30s-friendly routine.
