How Researchers Find Insight in Experiences

Having acne doesn’t mean you need to avoid a huge list of ingredients. Irritation and pore-clogging products are the main things to watch for.

🚫 Ingredients/products to be cautious with

  • Heavy, occlusive products β€” very rich creams, balms, or oils may worsen clogged pores for some people. This varies by person.
  • Fragrance/parfum β€” doesn’t necessarily cause acne, but can irritate sensitive or acne-treated skin.
  • Essential oils β€” can be irritating, particularly if your skin is already inflamed.
  • Harsh alcohols such as denatured alcohol (alcohol denat.) β€” can be drying and irritating in some formulations.
  • Physical scrubs β€” rough particles can aggravate inflamed pimples even though they’re not technically an β€œingredient.”
  • Very strong exfoliating combinations β€” using several acids, retinoids, and acne treatments together can damage your skin barrier and make irritation worse.

⚠️ Don’t automatically avoid every oil

Ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or mineral oil aren’t universally bad for acne. Whether a product causes breakouts depends on the formulation and your individual skin.

The bigger rule: choose non-comedogenic, gentle products, introduce active ingredients gradually, and stop a product if it repeatedly causes irritation or breakouts.
