Different Types of Acne Explained
Acne comes in several forms. Knowing which type you have can help you choose the right treatment.
1. Whiteheads
Closed comedones — pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, but the opening remains closed. They appear as small, flesh-colored or white bumps.
2. Blackheads
Open comedones — the pore is clogged but open to the air. The dark color comes from oxidation of the material in the pore, not dirt.
3. Papules
Small, red or pink, raised bumps caused by inflammation. Unlike whiteheads, they generally don’t contain visible pus.
4. Pustules
Inflamed pimples containing visible white or yellowish pus, usually surrounded by redness.
5. Nodules
Large, firm, painful lumps that develop deep beneath the skin. They can be more likely to leave scars.
6. Cysts
Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions. Cystic acne can cause significant inflammation and has a higher risk of permanent scarring.
Quick guide
| Type | Typical appearance | Inflammation |
|---|---|---|
| Whitehead | Small closed bump | Low |
| Blackhead | Dark open pore | Low |
| Papule | Red raised bump | High |
| Pustule | Red bump with pus | High |
| Nodule | Deep, hard lump | Very high |
| Cyst | Deep, painful pus-filled lump | Very high |
One important distinction: not every bump is acne. Folliculitis, irritation, rosacea, and other skin conditions can look similar.
If you’re dealing with painful deep acne, frequent breakouts, or scarring, a dermatologist can help determine the exact type and most appropriate treatment.
