Blackheads, Whiteheads, and Pimples Explained
These are all forms of acne, but they differ in how clogged and inflamed the pore is.
⚫ Blackheads
Blackheads are open clogged pores. Oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and other debris build up inside the pore. Because the pore is open, the material reacts with air and turns dark.
Important: Blackheads aren’t caused by dirt, so scrubbing harder won’t remove them.
⚪ Whiteheads
Whiteheads are closed clogged pores. Oil and dead skin cells become trapped beneath a thin layer of skin, creating a small white or skin-colored bump.
They usually aren’t very inflamed.
🔴 Pimples
“Pimples” is a general term for inflamed acne lesions. They can appear as:
- Papules: red, swollen bumps without visible pus
- Pustules: red bumps with a white/yellow center
Inflammation is what makes pimples different from simple blackheads and whiteheads.

Tip: Avoid squeezing or picking any of them. It can worsen inflammation and increase the chance of marks or scarring.
