The Right Way to Care for a Breakout

When a breakout appears, the best approach is gentle care + consistent acne treatment + no picking.

🌞 Morning

  1. Cleanse gently with a mild, non-scrubbing cleanser.
  2. Use an acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid if your skin tolerates it.
  3. Moisturize with a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
  4. Apply SPF 30–50 every day. Sun exposure can make acne marks darker and last longer.

🌙 Night

  1. Gently cleanse your face.
  2. Apply your acne treatment.
  3. Moisturize.

🩹 For an individual pimple

A hydrocolloid patch can protect a superficial pimple and discourage touching it. Leave it alone rather than squeezing it.

🚫 Avoid

  • Popping or picking
  • Scrubbing the breakout
  • Lemon juice, toothpaste, or rubbing alcohol
  • Layering multiple irritating acne treatments
  • Constantly touching your face

If you accidentally pop it

Don’t keep squeezing. Gently clean the area, leave it alone, and protect it with a clean patch if appropriate. Continued trauma is what increases the risk of dark spots and scarring.

If your acne is deep or painful, keeps returning, or is leaving scars, professional treatment is worth considering.
