Popping a pimple can feel satisfying, but it can turn a small problem into a bigger one.

Why it can make things worse

  • You damage the skin: Squeezing creates tiny tears and wounds around the pore.
  • Inflammation can spread deeper: Pressure can push oil, bacteria, and inflammatory material farther into surrounding tissue.
  • It can increase the chance of infection: Once the skin barrier is broken, bacteria can get in more easily.
  • It can leave dark spots: Skin injury and inflammation can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in medium-to-deep skin tones.
  • It can cause permanent scars: Deep or repeatedly squeezed pimples are more likely to result in depressed or raised acne scars.
  • It can prolong the pimple: More trauma means more inflammation, so the area may stay swollen and red longer.
  • Picking can become a cycle: You squeeze → the skin becomes rough or scabbed → you notice it → you pick again → more damage.

A better approach

If you want to get rid of a pimple, don’t squeeze it. Use an appropriate acne treatment, and for a superficial pimple, a hydrocolloid patch can protect it from touching and picking.

And if you’ve already popped it, don’t panic—stop squeezing, gently clean it, and let the skin heal. One popped pimple doesn’t automatically mean you’ll scar.
